Medical Devices Industry, although a very young branch of industries in Turkey, is rapidly growing in parallel with the global development in the world. Turkey is able to respond with local contribution by about 15% to the need of medical equipment which it mainly imports.

The medical device industry, which has attracted considerable attention in recent years by consolidating its position in the economy, has a workforce and facility potential that can make significant progress in exports over the coming years.

The emergence of the healthcare sector in Samsun dates back to the early 1980's. Started with the transition from weapons production to the repair of surgical instruments, today many products of medical industry such as surgical motor systems, sterile container systems, fibre optic lighting, hospital gas systems, surgical instruments, general surgery, neurosurgery, brain exterminators, orthopaedics, silicone base and holder, slippers, x-ray devices, hearing aids, wire baskets, laboratory setup, medical consumables, hospital beds are manufactured by around 30 firms in the industry and many more are exported to more than 80 countries. These 30 companies are operating under Mediclust Medical Industry and Trade Joint Stock Company.

Main export products are; surgical equipment and sterile containers to Europe (Germany, France and Italy) and North Africa, wire baskets to France, Italy and USA, surgical motor, medical equipment and sterile container to Azerbaijan, pharmacological and injectable bulbs to Russia, Syria and Georgia and oxygen hoods to Russia. Hearing aids are exported to Bulgaria, Iran, Iraq, Tunisia and Greece and moulds are exported to Russia, Tunisia and Algeria.

Samsun is regarded as one of the important clustering and production centres in the production of medical surgical hand tools, after Germany's Tutlingen and Pakistan's Sailkot cities.

Turkey’s first high school with Medical Device Technology, Vacational and Technical Anatolian High School was opened in Samsun.In order to get more share from the world market in the sector, a public company by the name of Mediclust Medical Industry and Trade Joint Stock Company was established under the leadership of Samsun Metropolitan Municipality. In the sector with high added value, there are also medical software companies operating in 19 Mayıs University Technopark, in addition to the manufacturer companies.
