Samsun is a convenient centre for the development of aquaculture and animal husbandry sub-sectors thanks to its natural resources such as climate, soil and topography.

 

The province is particularly attractive for the investors in value added areas such as animal breeding, contract farming and processing&packaging of animal food products. For example, Samsun has a potential to create investment opportunities in many areas such as the processing of fishery products, processing&packaging of milk and dairy products and the creation of cold chain.

 

Samsun is a determinant of the region in aquaculture in terms of fisheries or fish farming with its strategic location, ports, fishermen 's shelters, modern fishing boats, qualified labor force and modern urban identity. It is the only province in the Black Sea where the bottom trawl fishery due to the suitability of the continental shelf and, accordingly, the medium water trawl fishery, is widely used. It has a significant place in terms of inland water fishery because of the plenty of dam lakes, lagoons and rivers. Located in the Black Sea Region, which ranks the first place in the production of seafood, Samsun hosts fishing activities not only for cooking but also for industrial purposes. An important part of the anchovy fish and the whole of sprat fish are utilized in fish flour and oil facilities. There is considerable capacity in the region for fish flour and oil facilities.

There are 5 fisherman's shelters in Samsun and a total number 629 vessels (157 fishing vessels operating offshore and 472 out at sea). In 2018, approximately 60.000 tons of water products were obtained through hunting and breeding activities.


Samsun has an important place in Turkey in terms of animal existence. Samsun province has the most water buffalo in Turkey with 12,1%. In terms of animal products, the province is the first in the production of buffalo milk and 11th in cow milk production.

 

With the "Calf Milk Project", which is supported by 2017 Guided Project Support Program, implemented by the Middle Black Sea Development Agency, is planned to prevent calf deaths who cannot get enough oral milk from their mothers in the first 8 hours after birth.

Another activity carried out in the field of livestock in Samsun is beekeeping. In terms of honey production, Samsun ranks 26th among other provinces.
